Moving in school term
Most Hills family moves happen with school running, because settlement dates do not read the term calendar. Here is how to keep moving week from swallowing the term.
The timing facts to line up first
- Settlement and key release set the earliest possible moving day; everything else plans backwards from them
- NSW school term dates are published years ahead by the Department of Education; holidays and the first and last weeks of term are the crunch points for family logistics
- Weekends book first with every removalist, ours included. A weekday move in term time is often easier to book and calmer to run: the kids are at school while the house moves around them
The quiet advantage of a term-time weekday move: the children leave one house in the morning and come home to another, with their beds already up. School does the childcare, and moving day involves fewer people underfoot.
The backwards plan (three weeks out)
- Three weeks out: book the crew, start the cull.
Lock the moving date, book any kerbside clean-up, and start packing the rooms nobody uses daily: the formal lounge, the garage shelves, the linen you are not sleeping in.
- Two weeks out: notify the school run.
School office, sport clubs, tutoring, carpool parents. If the school stays the same, the run just gets a new starting point; drive it once before moving week so the first Monday is not an experiment.
- One week out: pack everything but the last five boxes.
Each child keeps a school box: uniform, shoes, sport kit, homework, charger. It is packed last, travels in the car, and opens first in the new house. Same idea for the kitchen kettle box.
- Moving day: beds up first.
The crew's unload order puts bedrooms together before the lounge matters. Kids sleep in their own beds the first night; the boxes can wait, the routine cannot.
If the dates go wrong
Settlements slip. If yours moves, tell us early: shifting a booking a few days is usually workable, and the honest answer about a tight date is always better a week out than the night before. We plan family moves with a little slack for exactly this reason.
