Moving in the NSW Summer School Holidays: A Family Plan for December and January

If you want to move house without taking the kids out of class, the summer break is your window. In NSW it runs from Friday 18 December 2026 to Wednesday 27 January 2027 for Sydney schools. That covers the whole Hills District. Plenty of other families are planning around the same dates, so the useful work happens now: pick a date, line up your address changes, and plan a moving day that respects the heat.

Here at Castle Hill Removals we think of the summer move as three jobs, not one. There is the booking, the paperwork and the day itself. This guide takes them in that order.

The summer window runs 18 December to 27 January

  1. End of term
  2. Holidays start
  3. Christmas
  4. Boxing Day
  5. New Year
  6. Australia Day
  7. Holidays end

Term 4 finishes for students on Thursday 17 December 2026. The holidays start the next day and, for the Eastern division that covers Sydney, end on Wednesday 27 January 2027. By our count that is 41 days, about six weeks.

A footnote for anyone with family out west: the Western division, which covers schools in the far west of NSW, runs to Wednesday 3 February 2027. It does not apply to Castle Hill, Kellyville or anywhere else in the Hills.

Six weeks sounds roomy. It is less roomy than it looks. Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year sit in the middle of it, and Australia Day falls in the last week. Many families also want a few quiet days to settle the kids before school goes back. Take those out and the realistic choices shrink to a handful of weeks.

Why the good dates go first

The summer break lines up three things that rarely coincide. The kids are not in class, many parents have leave, and the days are long. That is why so many school-age households aim for the same stretch, and it is why your preferred date is worth settling early.

Two quick decisions make the booking easier:

  • Early or late in the holidays. Moving in the week before Christmas gives you the whole break to unpack. Moving in mid to late January keeps Christmas in the old house but leaves less settling time before school.
  • How much is actually going. A clear answer here changes how the job is sized. Our guide to load size and whether it is one trip or two walks through the arithmetic. If the garage is the unknown, start with the double garage, because it is usually the room nobody counts.

If the holiday weeks do not suit, a term-time move has its own advantages. We cover them in Moving in school term.

Change your address before the truck, not after

The admin is easiest done in the quiet weeks before the holidays, while school routines are still running. Three places do most of the work.

Mail. Australia Post's mail redirection can be set up for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, online for an Australian address or at a Post Office for an overseas one. Our view: three months catches the Christmas cards and most monthly bills. Twelve months catches the once-a-year letters, such as insurance renewals and annual statements, which are the ones that tend to go missing.

Licence and rego. If you have a MyServiceNSW account, Service NSW's Change address with NSW Government updates your vehicle or vessel registration, driver licence, Seniors Card and RSA or RCG competency card details in one step.

Everything else the state holds. Service NSW also publishes a guide to moving house and changing your details with NSW Government agencies. It lists the licences, registrations, permits and certificates people need to update. Work down it once, tick as you go, and you will not be hunting for a stray permit in February.

Moving with the kids at home

The upside of a holiday move is that nobody misses school. The downside is that everyone is home while you pack. A few habits help:

  • Pack their rooms last. Keep beds, a few favourite toys and the usual bedtime things in place until the final days. A familiar room makes the rest of the chaos easier to take.
  • Give each child a first-night box. Pyjamas, a toothbrush, a water bottle, a book and whatever they sleep with. Label it with their name and travel it in the car, not the truck.
  • Give them a job. Older kids can pack and label their own books and games. It is slower, and it is worth it.
  • Plan for the first day back. If the move means a new school, sort enrolment, uniforms and book lists during the holidays rather than in the last week. Check the first student day with the school itself, because the date holidays end and the date a class starts are not always the same.

If packing around small children sounds like more than the week can hold, our packing and wrapping service page explains how that side of the move works.

Packing and lifting in the summer heat

  1. Morning Heavy and bulky items go out early.
  2. Midday The middle of the day is for indoor work.
  3. Late afternoon Unload late in the afternoon where you can

A Sydney summer changes the moving day more than any other factor. SafeWork NSW's guidance on working in extreme heat points out that people who work in hot environments, indoor or outdoor, may be at risk of heat stress. Anything that makes sweating less effective makes it harder for the body to control its temperature. A closed-up house full of boxes can be a hot environment too.

So shape the day around the sun:

  • Heavy and bulky items go out early. Fridges, wardrobes and the washing machine move best in the cool of the morning.
  • The middle of the day is for indoor work. Taping boxes, wrapping crockery and dismantling beds can happen in the shade with a fan running.
  • Unload late in the afternoon where you can, with the heaviest pieces off first while energy is still up.
  • Drink before you are thirsty, and rest on a schedule, not when you feel like stopping.

The lifting itself deserves the same care. Safe Work Australia's model Code of Practice: Hazardous manual tasks deals with the lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying that packing involves. The practical version for a family move: keep boxes small enough to carry close to your body, put books and tools in the smallest cartons, and use a trolley for anything you would have to twist to carry. If you are moving a home with a pool table, a piano or a double-door fridge, our family home moves page covers what to raise when you ask for a quote.

Checking who you hire

Whoever you choose, it is worth doing your own homework. The Australian Furniture Removers Association describes itself as Australia's peak body for the removals industry, supporting it through advocacy, compliance, training and education. Ask any mover you are considering whether they are a member, then check with AFRA yourself rather than taking anyone's word for it, ours included.

It also helps to ask the same questions of every mover so you can compare answers: what is included, how the job is priced, and what happens if your date moves. Our removalist FAQ covers the questions we hear most.

Your summer move, week by week

  • Pick your date inside the 18 December to 27 January window
  • Decide what is going
  • Start the address list
  • Move on a cool morning with water on the truck and a first-night box in the car

Spring is the calm before the rush. Pick your date inside the 18 December to 27 January window, decide what is going, and start the address list. Then move on a cool morning with water on the truck and a first-night box in the car.

If you are planning a holiday move in the Hills District, the next step is to tell us your date and what is coming with you. You can book a removalist quote online, and we will come back to you with what the job looks like. Not sure we cover your suburb? Check the areas we move.
